Marian Sangham
Monthly Meetings, Saturdays (1:30 PM - 3:00 PM)

Marian Sangham is the women’s forum of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Syro-Malabar Catholic Mission of Greater Washington.

The Marian Sangham was founded in September 2011 with the support and guidance from our Mission Director Fr. Mathew Punchayil. The mission of the group is to promote the spiritual growth of self, family, church and community as well as to provide support to our Church’s spiritual, cultural and social activities. The goal of each member of this group is to grow in the qualities of Mother Mary as a woman and awife.

We started the group with eight members and have now grown to about twenty fivemembers. Fr. Mathew told us - “The source of strength of the Church is the women in the Church”. This helped us to realize that the women of our Church community needtocome together and mobilize our resources for our own personal growth, for our families and for the Church.

The Marian Sangham meets once a month on a Saturday for about two hours. The group meetings focus on understanding and learning the qualities of Mother Mary as the ideal representative of a total womanhood. The members pray the Rosary, Litany of Mother Mary, Canticle of Mary (Luke 1: 46-55), prayer to St. Michael and other intercessory prayers. The group studies the qualities of Mother Mary and the members take effort to practice them in their personal lives. Discussions are also focused on the various challenges that our families’face in the present time, especially on ways to improve spousal relationship and in the upbringing of our children. These discussions are always guided by the study of the Holy Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church book.

The Marian members take active participation in the church activities like teaching the Sunday School, singing in the choir for the Holy Qurbana, conducting Malayalam classes for the children, participation in the liturgy, involvement in the parish day celebration, parish picnic and supporting other church events like fund raising, retreats and so on. The group is also involved in charity work and has been helping the mentally challenged children of the Anugraha School, Kottayam. Praying for families and visiting the sick has been a core focus of the Marian Sangham. Some of the members participated in the January 2013 March for Life events in the Washington Metro area. The First Anniversary of the Marian Sangham was celebrated by its members in September 2012 by taking a Pilgrimage to The National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, Emmitsburg, Maryland.

Mother Mary is our Role Model. Biblical study and taking efforts to practice Mother Mary’s qualities at our homes and work places have made notable changes in our personal lives and in our families.  We thank God for giving us a forum to meet every month to pray, help and grow together. It gives us great hope in the midst of all the challenges that our families and children go through each day.

The Marian Sangham takes this opportunity to invite new members to join the group.

Let us pray:

“Hail Mary, full of grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death.  Amen."
